Dixon wins third pole of season

Pete DiPrimio’s story

Scott Dixon ran twice on Saturday, and on race day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway he’ll start first. Dixon turned in a four-lap average speed of 226.366 mph and a time of 2:39.0348 to claim the pole position for the 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 25.

Dixon won his third pole position in five races this season. In the other two races, he qualified second and 13th (road course). Dixon qualified fourth in the line-up for his first attempt, running an average speed of 225.178 to take the pole from Marco Andretti. Four drivers later, Danica Patrick thrilled the crowd, moving into P1.

With 21 minutes left before the end of qualifying, Dixon’s teammate Dan Wheldon took the track for a final run at knocking Dixon off the top spot. Wheldon’s first lap was fast enough to take the pole, but speeds dropped on the final three laps. Wheldon qualified second for a Target-Ganassi sweep of the top 2 spots.

Penske Racing teammates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves took the third and fourth spots. Patrick and Tony Kanaan rounded out the second row. Andretti, Vitor Meira, and Hideki Mutoh qualified in the third row, and Ed Carpenter and Tomas Scheckter took the final two positions of the day.
