Pole claim short lived

Danica Patrick held down the pole position at Indy on Saturday almost long enough to get out of her press conference. Patrick nervously watched the TV screens as Dan Wheldon ran a solid time, and then took the pole from her as she exited the press conference.

Patrick watched as four other drivers knocked her down into the fifth position. Early in the afternoon Patrick ran several laps during practice sessions trying to get her car trimmed out. But weather, track conditions and watching teammate Marco Andretti run nearly four mph slower in the afternoon kept the team from taking the gamble to send her back on the track. Patrick and her Andretti-Green Racing team opted to keep her fifth-position qualification and not send her back on the track for a second go.
